Every movie on our website has a message fro Jesus Christ.

A college aged Chinese girl begins seeking the Lord and learns the truth about what is happening within her country and what happened inher own family. This film has a penetrating message and is a well crafted drama that shows the true cost of following Christ.

Movie Review: Bamboo in the Winter (1991)

young Chinese girl begins seeking the Lord and learns the truth about what is going on in her own country and what happened within her own family.

The movie portrayed this lady, Ah Choir (main character of the movie) who has just graduated from University and is back in her village, awaiting posting of her new job. Her father has spent a great deal to send her for education in Beijing. What she can remember was the scene she saw in Tiananmen Square where the graduates were filled with dreams after their graduation. Her old grandmother is a Christian and sick in bed. But when news that a preacher is coming to the her village, her grandmother prayed for a miracle to happen. Ah Choi was curious and had to accompany her grandmother to the meetings. You can see how Christians in China gather with joy and filled with thirst when they listen to God’s Word. The grandmother died out of rage when she saw a preacher from the three-self church in China in her own house, who was actually a betrayer.

Ah Choi only knew that her mother died of some illness but later, her father revealed to her that it was her faith in Jesus Christ that has costed her life. She martyred and never deny her faith. There were just few scenes of how persecution was like – cutting of fingers and beating with rods and whips. Really caused me to think again about my belief. If this Christian belief and the Immanuel, covenanted message is ever so more revolutionary and so much more systematic than that a simple preacher can preach in a village filled with peasants and turn many people who has simple faith to Christ, then how much more can this covenanted message touch and turn millions and billions of life to Christ and really cause a revolution in China!

Watching this movie just cause me to reflect on the first love I received from God when I first accepted Jesus Christ. The preacher in the movie was later arrested by the Chinese government/Communist but he left an impression on Ah Choi and one me:

Preacher: “Training (to be a preacher) is necessary but not as important as the heart – the Lord’s heart”.

Later on, Ah Choi read the Bible and was really touched and received Christ. She was still lost about what she can do but she only know that there are people in another village who needs to hear God’s Word. She is the only one who knows where the Bible materials left by the preacher were left buried somewhere. She hoped for a miracle to happen but she thought no miracle has ever happened in her life. Only then did her father reveal to her that her grandmother’s prayer for the miracle did happen – it was not for her grandmother to be healed from her sickness but for Ah Choi to come to know the Lord. Being certain about the Lord’s calling, Ah Choi left to pass on God’s Word to another village after finding real life herself.

Real enjoyment in life is much more than just receiving material blessings and living for your own dreams. Humans are so created that only God can satisfy the emptiness not found in knowledge, money, reputation and temporary things.
